History of Holy Spirit Catholic Church
Holy Spirit Catholic Church was established in April 1981, when the parish boundaries of St. Anthony of Padua and Our Lady of Perpetual Help were realigned. We started with around 400 families under the leadership of Monsignor James Logan. Initially, Holy Mass was celebrated at Fort Washington Elementary School, and later was moved to Clovis West High School due to increasing growth of our parish community.
Mr. & Mrs. Spalding Wathen and Mr. & Mrs. Richard Wathen donated the land for the parish complex. The multi-purpose parish hall was completed on April 1, 1990 and was used to celebrate Mass, hold social events and conferences for the next 11 years. The dream of someday completing our parish came true on November 18, 2001 with the dedication of our new sanctuary.
For a time, Holy Spirit Church also served two missions communities in our foothill and mountain areas. Infant Jesus of Prague in Tollhouse and the community at Shaver Lake. The missions were later assigned to Divine Mercy Catholic Church in Clovis.
After faithfully serving the families of Holy Spirit Parish for 21 years, Monsignor James T. Logan retired in 2002. The hall was named Msgr. James T. Logan Hall, in honor of his dedicated service to our parish. Upon the retirement of Msgr. Logan, our parish was blessed to have Reverend Father Eric Swearingen as our pastor until March of 2014. In July of the same year, we were blessed to have Reverend Monsignor Patrick McCormick join us to lead our flock. The blessings continue with Permanent Deacon Pete Marquez joining us in October of 2019 and Permanent Deacon Gabriel Gil in July of 2024. In August of 2024, Deacon Bill Lucido was ordained and became our Parochial Vicar.
Our sanctuary space is over 22,000 square feet and has seats for 1,000 people. The cost of Logan Hall was $1.8 million and the Sanctuary building cost approximately $5.5 million.
The generosity, dedication and commitment of our 4,500 + registered families continues to bless this community as we journey together in faith under the guidance and inspiration of our patron, the Holy Spirit.
Holy Spirit Parish serves parts of the northeast and northwest urban areas of Fresno, northeast Fresno County through Friant, the Millerton Lake area and a section of southeastern Madera County.
