Preparedness Information
September is FEMA Emergency Preparedness Month.
When disasters occur, professional first responders are not the first on the scene. If access is obstructed or the agency’s capacity is exceeded, it may be hours — or days — before professional help arrives. Do you know what to do? Do you know how to help? Do your family members or colleagues know what to do?
Is your home prepared for an emergency? Does your family have a plan? If so, great! You are ahead of most. Now, what about elderly family members or those with disabilities or your pets? Where will you meet if you are separated? Does everyone know how to get there? Do you have an emergency contact that is out of the area?
Are you prepared if you are at work or school? Do those places have a plan? Where are the emergency exits, fire extinguishers, utility shut offs?
Is your vehicle prepared? Is it in good operating condition? Does it have an emergency kit inside? If a mechanic can't get to you, do you know the basics? Can you, your spouse or your teen change a tire? Can you read a map if you can't get a signal for your GPS?
Now, what about your neighborhood? Do you or your neighbors have special skills or equipment that can be of assistance in an emergency? Medical, carpentry, mechanical, electrical, tools, child care, cooking, a caring shoulder to lean on or a caring ear to listen? We are all called to be the hands and feet of Christ. Learn how to be prepared.
Where do we start? We can learn a lot about personal safety and how to help others. Below are some links where you can get information or sign up to take a few classes. Don't wait for an emergency to start thinking about it. Click through the resource links below!
